Looking up from Sicily
Currently chilling in an Airbnb in a town named Pollina in Sicilia. And looking north towards the main land I cant help but feel empty. Not because of anything bad, I'm just tired. I've spent 5 weeks in Italy and I've seen one percent of one percent of the country. How can i have an educated opinion about this place that is so ancient and full of history with such a short exposure. I don't think if i lived my whole life here that I'd be able to do justice to the way this country *feels*. I'd need 100 lifetimes to accurately portray to a reader what Italy is. I've been on a roller-coaster since i got here in terms of experiences. Ups and downs and ups and downs, and now that im coming to the end i feel dizzy and my head hurts and i really just want a slushy from sonic.
This country is stunning, the people are nice, beautiful, and the food is outstanding. The streets are worse than new York in many places and the bathrooms are often gross. The wine is fantastic and the fruit is a little overpriced. The street vendors are artisans and scam artist at the same time. They'll smile at you while trying to take money out of your pocket, and then give you the best restaurant recommendation you've ever had in your life. A Kenyan guy will tell you about Italian food and the Italian guy will tell you about a cool Thai restaurant. Its soo weird, and it doesn't make any sense from anyway you look at it. I legit don't get it. I Don't know if they get it? Does anyone? How could anyone? I'm leaving less confident in my spoken Italian and more confident that I could definitively get better.
I wish i had some grand arcane knowledge, I don't, sorry. Figure it out your self, A puzzle isnt fun if someone gives you the answer and no one seems capable of giving me an answer, so i must presume that one doesn't exist.
And ya know what, fine, how fantastic is that. An enigma in our time? When everyone knows everything. Its a welcome reprieve from the burden of perfect knowledge.
Thank you Italy, for being so damn confusing.
